Scholarship and ROTC Awards

The chapter's drive to provide three scholarships and fund ROTC awards for 2010 has been completed and the winners of the scholarships are presented here.

2011 Scholarship Winners

We would like to thank our scholarship committee for their diligent work in choosing our scholarship winners from this year's highly qualified applicants. The committee does not know the names of the students until after the selection is made. Most of the students took college classes while in High School, were highly involved in school, Jr ROTC and volunteer activities.  They are invited to our May meeting to tell us a little about themselves and their goals.

Our first place winner is Theresia Ohms from Lake Winnebago Mo and Lee’s Summit West HS.  She ranks 6th out of a class of 420 with a 4.47 GPA. Her accelerated classes include Calculus, Chemistry, German and Psychology. She was the Missouri State Champion, Jr Olympics 3 position Marksmanship last year and won the best German historical film award. She’s also provided emergency medical services as a Ski Patrol the last two years.  Her JrROTC instructor say’s she’s won numerous awards for her stellar history of academic achievement, highest degree of leadership and military bearing.

Our second place winner, Kelsey Connelly, is also from Lee’s Summit West and another marksman with awards in the National Small Bore championships. She is ranked 62 out of 420 and has accelerated classes in math, chemistry, biology and physics. Her GPA is 402. She’s been active in many volunteer events to include the Veterans Stand Down and the Mentally Disable Kid’s Rodeo. She is Lee’s Summit West’s JrROTC Cadet Corps Commander this year. Her goal is to be a pilot and continue to be active with horses.

Our third place prize is divided between two of our active member’s grandchildren. Ella Snyder, of Haverford Academy, is the granddaughter of Col Jim and Pat Snyder. She is second in her class and has a 3.89 GPA. Her honor classes in science, writing and history. Besides giving piano concerts to nursing home residents, she has volunteered for Mission trips to Guadalajara Mexico. Her councilor said she’s watched Ella grow in “knowledge, wisdom and service. She is hard working and the first to volunteer.”

The other third place winner is Jakob Leaderbrand, grandson of Col Garey and Jan Reeves. He is from Lee’s Summit High School and has a 3.81 GPA. He’s an Eagle Scout and received State awards for swimming this past year. Besides lettering in four sports he has honors courses in Physics, Biology and Calculus.  He’s also a volunteer with special needs soccer, Kids Country and various community clean ups. His councilor also has impressive words about his academics and athletics.

Gold Bar Program

The chapter ROTC Liaison Officer coordinates with area colleges and universities for chapter members to present the first set of 2nd Lieutenant gold bars to ROTC cadets being commissioned..

Visits to Veterans Hospitals

Every year we go to area Veterans Hospitals in the month of July. We deliver cards and a word of encouragement to those that have served our Nation and are living in the hospital complex.

Veterans Stand-Down

The Chapter supports the June and November Veterans Stand-Downs in Kansas City, MO and Kansas City, KS. These 3-day events provide veterans and their family members with clothing, personal hygiene items, haircuts, dental checks, medical checks, legal counseling and placement services, all at no cost to the veteran. Support from chapter members is in the form of volunteer labor and cash donations.

Legislative Action

Contact is maintained with State and National Legislators and members are encouraged to correspond with their representatives in Jefferson City, Topeka, and Washington, D.C. A list of Congressmen and Senators with contact information is available here.

Representation at the MOAA National Convention

A member of the executive council attends the National Convention to represent the Chapter. All members are encouraged to participate in this event.

Council of Chapters

A senior officer of the Chapter attends the quarterly meetings of the Council of Chapters of Missouri at various locations around the state to share information with other chapters and to receive information and guidance from the Missouri State MOAA executive staff.

Summer Picnic

The Chaptere has a picnic every year at the DAV building. This free picnic is in place of either the regular June or July meeting. The date and any special activity will be announced later on this page. We enjoy some fantastic food and have a great time. We hold the picnic indoors because of the problems with heat, humidity and inclement weather. And it's impossible to beat the price when it is FREE. At our 2011picnic we enjoyed Big Band music so there is no telling what will be in store for the picnic in 2012.

Holiday/Christmas Party

Our December Meeting is an evening Party held at the DAV Building. We have a night out and enjoy some seasonal entertainment.
